Position Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Vegetation Management Field Supervisor to oversee seasonal vegetation management activities across renewable energy sites in Wheatfield, Indiana. This role is responsible for directing daily field operations, supervising a union workforce, coordinating equipment and maintenance needs, and ensuring vegetation management work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and environmental requirements.
The ideal candidate will bring experience in landscaping, grounds maintenance, industrial maintenance, or a related field, along with proven ability to lead field crews in a safety-sensitive environment. This individual will be responsible for maintaining orderly and safe site conditions across multiple locations, coordinating work execution, and supporting overall operational reliability at renewable assets, including PV/solar environments.
This is a field-based supervisory role requiring strong leadership, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple work priorities while maintaining a high standard of safety, productivity, and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Field Supervision & Work Execution
- Supervise and direct seasonal vegetation management activities across renewable energy sites.
- Lead a team of union craft employees performing vegetation management using company fleet equipment, including zero-turn mowers, Tool-Cats with attachments, tractors, and Bushhog equipment.
- Oversee day-to-day field execution to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with schedule and operational priorities.
- Coordinate work assignments across multiple sites and manage competing priorities effectively.
- Determine when overtime is necessary to meet business and operational needs.
Safety Leadership
- Maintain a safe work environment and promote a strong safety culture across all assigned work.
- Conduct pre-job safety briefings and ensure all employees understand and follow applicable safety rules, procedures, and expectations.
- Perform documented safety observations for operations and maintenance work.
- Consistently reinforce safe work practices and ensure direct reports are working in accordance with company safety standards.
- Address unsafe conditions or behaviors promptly and take appropriate corrective action.
Environmental & Regulatory Compliance
- Verify all work performed is in compliance with environmental permits, environmental procedures, and company standards.
- Ensure commitment to environmental compliance is clearly communicated and upheld by all crafts, contractors, and support teams.
- Monitor field execution to ensure vegetation management practices align with site-specific requirements and operational constraints.
Workforce Leadership & Labor Coordination
- Supervise, train, and evaluate employees in the proper use of tools, equipment, machinery, vegetation management practices, and safe work procedures.
- Communicate work performance standards, expectations, and productivity requirements to employees.
- Administer and uphold the Employee Productivity Guidelines, Code of Conduct, and collective bargaining agreement.
- Lead and coordinate a union workforce with professionalism, consistency, and accountability.
- Foster teamwork, discipline, and clear communication across field personnel and support teams.
Equipment, Maintenance & Operational Support
- Coordinate with fleet teams and third-party suppliers to support spare parts needs, equipment maintenance, and repair schedules.
- Assist in monitoring equipment condition and troubleshooting abnormal operating issues in partnership with operating departments.
- Help determine appropriate maintenance scope and timing of repairs to support efficient field operations.
- Coordinate closely with Renewable Maintenance Supervisors and related support teams to align field execution with site needs.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Report onsite to supervise field vegetation management work across renewable locations.
- Conduct safety briefings and ensure crews are prepared for daily assignments.
- Assign work, monitor progress, and verify quality and compliance of field activities.
- Coordinate equipment use, repairs, and maintenance schedules.
- Communicate with supervisors, peers, union craft employees, contractors, and external support teams regarding schedules, priorities, and issues.
- Monitor site conditions, environmental compliance, and workforce performance.
- Support troubleshooting, operational coordination, and field decision-making as needed.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 4–6 years of experience in landscaping, maintenance, or a related engineering/field discipline obtained in a power plant, industrial process, military service, or similarly structured environment.
- Experience leading and coordinating a union workforce.
- Strong understanding of and commitment to maintaining safe work practices and ensuring the safety of direct reports.
- Working knowledge of electrical systems.
- Ability to manage several projects or work priorities at one time across multiple sites.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively through a variety of media with supervisors, peers, direct reports, contractors, and external support teams.
- Familiarity with renewable assets, particularly PV/solar environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience or formal training in power plant or industrial operating departments.
- Experience with project management and/or maintenance management practices.
- Experience supporting field operations in renewable generation or industrial environments.
- Familiarity with environmental compliance expectations in utility or energy-related settings.
- Prior experience coordinating equipment fleets, repair schedules, and supplier support.
